What happened
According to the CTA, as reported by ICT in January 2021, Shurmo carried out a self-immolation protest near a bus station in Shagchukha village around 1 pm on 17 September 2015. The authorities detained him and took him to hospital, where he died the same day. News of his protest did not reach the outside world for more than five years because of Chinese restrictions on information.
Aftermath
Chinese security forces also arrested three of his relatives; it is not known whether they remain in detention, were sentenced or were released (CTA, via ICT).
