What happened

According to ICT, Jigme Tenzin, a monk in his late twenties, set fire to himself near his monastery, Sonak Gedun Tashi Choling, on 16 March 2014. Monks rushed to put out the flames, but he died at the scene and they carried him back to the monastery. A Tibetan who knew him told ICT he had studied at Rongwo Monastery in Rebkong and was "a very humble person".

Aftermath

ICT reported that Chinese armed police and officials detained a group of monks, some of whom were released the same day; "patriotic education" sessions were held at the monastery, monks’ movements and religious activities were restricted for about two months, and internet and mobile phone networks were cut off.
