On 18 March 2024, executive members of the New York and New Jersey Tibetan Association, alongside representatives of regional Voluntary Tibet Advocacy Group (V-TAG) members, met with Tandeep Kaur Sawney, Program Director at the office of U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer. The meeting focused on seeking the Senator’s support for S. 138, a Tibet-related bill then under consideration in the U.S. Senate.

During the meeting, Norbu Tsering, President of the New York and New Jersey Tibetan Association, briefed Sawney on the Association’s activities and its role in representing and supporting the Tibetan community. The delegation also requested her assistance in bringing the legislation to Senator Schumer’s attention and securing his support for its passage in the Senate.

The delegation further extended an invitation to Senator Chuck Schumer to attend as the chief guest at the Association’s forthcoming celebration of the birthday of His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama.

The engagement reflected the Tibetan community’s efforts to maintain dialogue with elected representatives and their offices, raise awareness of issues concerning Tibet, and pursue support for Tibet-related legislation through established democratic channels.
