The Voluntary Tibet Advocacy Group (V-TAG) Canada hosted a dinner reception in honour of Sikyong Penpa Tsering during his official visit to Canada on Friday, 16 May 2025, at the Tibetan Canadian Cultural Centre. Welcoming more than 300 attendees, the event brought together Tibetan community members, elected officials, local government representatives, long-standing supporters, and community partners for an evening celebrating leadership, cultural identity, and civic engagement.

Developed through weeks of strategic planning and collaboration, the reception marked a significant milestone for V-TAG Canada and demonstrated the growing contribution of Tibetan youth to community leadership. The gathering provided a platform to strengthen relationships across the Tibetan diaspora, recognise collective achievements, and explore the role of young people in shaping the future of their communities in Canada and beyond.

Showcasing Youth Leadership and V-TAG Canada’s Vision

The programme featured presentations by V-TAG Canada outlining the group’s mission, achievements, and vision for the future. The briefings highlighted its commitment to youth empowerment, civic participation, and the development of a strong foundation for sustained community engagement.

A special video compilation featuring V-TAG representatives from across Canada showcased the work and leadership of Tibetan youth in different regions. The presentation highlighted the collective efforts of the group’s members and reinforced a shared sense of purpose and unity across the country.

One of the evening’s highlights was a 30-minute youth panel discussion led by V-TAG team members. The discussion explored themes of Tibetan identity, civic responsibility, community building, and the importance of youth participation in public life. The panel provided a platform for young Tibetans to share perspectives, reflect on their experiences, and discuss how the next generation can contribute to stronger and more engaged communities.

Parliamentary Recognition and Cultural Celebration

The reception also featured a message from Alexa Gilmour, Member of Provincial Parliament, recognising V-TAG and the contributions of Tibetan youth to Canada’s multicultural society and democratic future. Her participation added a civic dimension to the gathering, highlighting the value of youth engagement and community participation.

Cultural performances formed an integral part of the evening, celebrating Tibetan artistic expression and the community’s shared heritage. The programme included a heartfelt musical performance by a V-TAG team member, an engaging presentation by former Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) artists, and a vibrant performance by the Toronto Nashoen youth group.

Together, the presentations created an atmosphere of cultural pride and intergenerational connection, bringing community members together through music, performance, and shared traditions.

A Collective Achievement Built on Community Support

The successful organisation of the reception was made possible through the dedication of more than 50 volunteers, 15 core V-TAG team members, over 20 sponsors, and numerous individual donors. Their collective contribution reflected the strength of community-driven initiatives and the importance of collaboration in sustaining youth-led organisations.

A particularly significant achievement was the event’s full financial sustainability, marking an important milestone in V-TAG Canada’s efforts to build a resilient foundation for its future initiatives. The accomplishment demonstrated how strategic planning, volunteer participation, and community support can work together to advance long-term goals.

Building the Future of Tibetan Youth Leadership

Reflecting on the reception, V-TAG Canada Coordinator Tenzin Wangmo emphasised the importance of creating a resilient, community-driven foundation for youth engagement.

“Dinner With Sikyong was not only a celebration of who we are today, but a launching point for what we aim to become. It affirmed that our community believes in the power and potential of our youth,” she said.

She further expressed V-TAG Canada’s heartfelt gratitude to everyone who contributed to the event, recognising the collective effort behind its success and its potential to inspire and empower a new generation of Tibetan leaders.

The dinner reception represented more than a commemorative gathering. It demonstrated how youth-led initiatives can bring together community members, public representatives, cultural contributors, and supporters around a shared commitment to leadership and civic participation. Through this landmark event, V-TAG Canada reaffirmed its focus on developing young leaders, strengthening community connections, and creating opportunities for meaningful engagement across the Tibetan diaspora.
