On 30 July 2026, V-TAG Australia National Coordinator Tenzin Dhargyal and former Coordinator Tenzin Norzin held a virtual meeting with Federal Member of Parliament Sarah Witty and a member of her office staff to discuss the implications of China’s Ethnic Unity and Progress Law for Tibetan Australians.

The discussion focused on concerns within the Tibetan Australian community regarding increased scrutiny, surveillance, and the potential for transnational repression. The representatives shared perspectives on how developments relating to the law could affect the community’s sense of security, freedom of expression, and ability to maintain cultural and social connections without fear or intimidation.

During the meeting, V-TAG Australia urged MP Sarah Witty to publicly condemn the law and call for its repeal, oppose transnational repression targeting Tibetan Australians, and raise these concerns through Australia’s bilateral and multilateral engagements. The discussion underscored the importance of protecting the rights and security of diaspora communities and ensuring that concerns affecting Australians are addressed through appropriate parliamentary and diplomatic channels.

At the conclusion of the meeting, MP Sarah Witty acknowledged the significance of condemning the law and confirmed that she would raise the concerns with Australia’s Foreign Minister, Penny Wong, and follow up with V-TAG Australia afterward.

This engagement reflects V-TAG Australia’s continued efforts to bring community concerns to elected representatives, strengthen parliamentary dialogue, and advocate for the protection of Tibetan Australians’ rights and well-being.
