What happened

According to ICT, Thubten Ngodrup set fire to himself in Delhi on 27 April 1998 as Indian police broke up a Tibetan Youth Congress hunger strike. ICT describes this as the first self-immolation protest in Tibetan society. He died in hospital in Delhi, and a statue stands in his memory beside the Dalai Lama’s temple in Dharamsala.
