What happened

According to ICT, Rikyo, a woman in her mid-thirties from a nomadic family, set fire to herself near Jonang Dzamthang Gonchen Monastery on 30 May 2012. Chinese security forces at the scene were unable to put out the fire, and she died.

Aftermath

Tibetans in exile told ICT her body was kept at the monastery until Chinese officials pressed for an immediate cremation; she was cremated the same day, and large numbers of Tibetans gathered for prayers despite heavy rain.
