What happened
According to ICT, citing Kirti monks in exile, Lungtok, a monk of about 20 studying at Kirti Monastery’s medical college, and a layman named Tashi set fire to themselves in a prayer-wheel enclosure on the monastery’s perimeter on the evening of 13 August 2012, then walked out onto the road into town calling out protest slogans. Chinese security forces surrounded Lungtok, put out the flames and took him away; both men were taken to the county hospital and then to the prefecture hospital in Barkham.
Aftermath
ICT reported that it was not known whether his body would be returned to his family, and that local Tibetans were beaten following the self-immolations that week.
