What happened
According to ICT, a Tibetan monk later named as Bhutuk wrapped himself in a Tibetan flag and set fire to himself at the Boudhanath stupa in Kathmandu on 10 November 2011, shouting slogans calling for a free Tibet. Pilgrims at the stupa quickly put out the flames and he survived. ICT reported that he was originally from Kardze (Ch: Ganzi) in Kham and later received medical treatment in India.
Aftermath
ICT reported that Tibetans in Kathmandu appear to have shielded his identity and whereabouts so that he could avoid arrest, amid fears that he could be deported into Chinese custody, given pressure from the Chinese government on the Nepalese authorities.
